Earth + Plastic

On the 4th of October 2018, a rock with a striking blue color could be seen on Ægisíða, the west shore of Reykjavik. It was made from polypropylene, a new material in our landscape.

Humans have created 8.3 billion metric tons of plastics since large-scale production of the materials began in the early 1950s - and its not going away any time soon.

Is it time to start embracing it as a part of our environment, as a new chemical element in the chain of materials that constructs our universe?

As copper or iron today, could plastics become a commodity or source material we seek to harvest or mine in the future?
